Thomas, there is no issue of "$35,000 vs disability or death for even one service member". The question was simply why use very expensive ordnance when a cheaper and equally deadly ordnance was available. It's not like if they didn't use the Hellfire, the guy was gonna get away and kill someone else later. He was lying on the ground in plain sight.

Thanks, guys. You've been very helpful! Each of you had a reasonable explanation. Unfortunately, each of you also follwed it up with a lack of class, and for no good reason. I have noticed a lot of comments lately from different individuals about the tendency of this site to trash other members in situations like this. Now I have a better understanding.

And, by the way, my use of the words "seems" is hardly "declarative".

Just for your informantion, the comparable weapon in my time was a 3.5 rocket launcher. It didn't have a video screen. Perhaps that explains why I wear a dunce cap.

I described the statement as declarative because it had a period at the end sentence, not because if the tone.

I haven't seen any body trashing you, I have seen them defending the overwhelming use of violence against our enemies. If I have come off as being in the former group then I apologize, it was not intended.

And one day this may well be used on us.

It’s why I cringe every time I see some new war technology come out, and everyone woots and brags at how awesome it is. I always wonder if people never consider that this new technology may well be used on them one day. Remember, the enemy is whoever the leadership says it is.

Just remember that any weapon needs an operator. I think people who assume US troops are going to be willing to shoot up other Americans are mis-estimating things. I know it happened 150 years ago, but I suspect (hope?) things are different now.
