When I posted this, I fully expected responses like these. I also thought there might be one which would offer some insight into the use of a Hellfire instead of a fully capable machine gun on a single man lying on the ground.

A little less preaching and a little more teaching.

Not a video game....

One cool thing (no pun intended) is that when the friendly troops show up on the FLIR you can tell that their clothing is made to limit the IR signature. The taliban guys look like flashlights in comparison.

He was out of 30mm ammo and still had targets...so he used his hellfires. Do you really need to have that explained our 'taught' to you?

Even at only $35,000, that seems to be a lot of overkill for one man.

OK.

Use whatever weapon at your disposal which has the highest probability of achieving an effect. Maybe range to target was an issue, or maybe there were blue forces downrange of where the rounds would have struck. Perhaps that was the only weapon available to the gunner at the time with a ready status.

Turn your first quote above into a question and you can possibly expect an answer. Make a declarative statement and expect some "preaching".

Thanks, guys. You've been very helpful! Each of you had a reasonable explanation. Unfortunately, each of you also follwed it up with a lack of class, and for no good reason. I have noticed a lot of comments lately from different individuals about the tendency of this site to trash other members in situations like this. Now I have a better understanding.

And, by the way, my use of the words "seems" is hardly "declarative".

Just for your informantion, the comparable weapon in my time was a 3.5 rocket launcher. It didn't have a video screen. Perhaps that explains why I wear a dunce cap.
