I keep hearing all the negativity and all the praise I been wanting to shoot a doe with the reloads I have for a confidence builder but every deer I have seen so far has been half a mile away on public and people are everywhere hopefully during the week will be different. I was about to feel more confident today after thinking about it and a friend brought by a decent buck this afternoon that his nephew shot twice in the shoulder and once behind the shoulder with 129 grain hornady and said he finally went down and so did my confidence again. Maybe a doe will come by tomorrow I would hate to lose a good buck

I’ve killed quite a bit of stuff with 6.5x55 (the caliber your man bun aspires to be), and I’ve never had an animal take a step. I only used 120 grain Corelokt bullets in my handloads though.
I won’t let go of any of my 120 grain bullets but will send you some 140 grain Corelokts if you want to try them.

I’ve read a lot of the same stuff. I’ll throw out a couple hypothesis. The caliber took a major jump in popularity and was bought by every new deer hunter. It was even bought by those that had used a tried and true gun of many years but wanted something different.
Here’s my confession, I did the latter. Still not writing it off as I haven’t had a good opportunity to let the caliber proof itself.
Im chalking the numbers up to new hunters using that caliber. Just a guess.

These are 140 SST’s but I might take you up on that

I took 4 last year with 6.5CM. 4 shots, 4 kills. 3 were shot > 200 yards. 2 dropped where they stood. 1 made it ~50 yards (and was the closest shot at under 50 yards). 1 made it ~100 yards. I was shooting Hornady 140gr ELD Match. I bought a new rifle this year but haven't had a chance to sight it in. So I'm taking the 6.5 as a backup in case I can't find a place to sight in the new rifle.

I have killed many with the Core-Lokt in 30-06 and 1 with the 129 gr in 6.5x55.
It was hit in the brisket head on and it turned and ran 20 yards and fell over.
The 150gr in 30-06 has punched exit holes in a double lung that sprayed blood in a 40 foot triangle all over the frozen grasses and that deer also went 20 yards and fell over.

The ELDM and Amax bullets will create devastating trauma and come apart easier than the Core-Lokt.
Heart shots are iffy on bullets that mushroom. Yea the deer will die but it may go a long ways.
V-max or A max bullets or thin jacketed varmint bullets like to shrapnel apart like a hand grenade once they get in.

If you can shoulder punch with those or double lung or vital neck shot the deer will fall within sight.
I like less running on my critters if I can get it and light varmint bullets are my choice.

I may get flamed but the 55 v max is devastating and if I had my choice a 120 ish in a tipped style like that in a 6.5 would be good in my book.

I have some 123 ELDM I should send at some deer this year.

Agree to disagree on this statement, because the buck I shot in the heart on Friday with the 165 grain Corelokt dropped like a rock. I’ve killed a ton of game with that gun and load combo, and it performs the same every time. :anyone:

Same results with 120 grain Corelokt out of a 6.5x55.
