I forgot to say, I have onions that never died off last year. They are planted in a spot that gets only morning sun, deep shade in the afternoons (up against the foundation of the house) and the fairly sandy soil stays pretty moist and cool year round (I toss excess pasta and potato water out the door onto the ground there after it has cooled), plus water the foundation from time to time. I don't know what kind they are but they are some of the sweetest tasting onions I've ever had.

You're good. Mine has only been in for two weeks and its going good. Just have fun with it and try different things. I try to plant something new every year just to see how it grows. If it doesn't grow, oh well, not like I'm going to starve if it doesn't do well.
