I consider it a distinct possibility that while in game, your OS doesn't realise the machine is actually in use, and is putting the NIC into a sleep mode to save power.

Don't know the answer to that question.

You're going to have to explain what "DHCP lease renewal" means.

Can you access your internal server when your game goes down? DHCP is the way you probably get your ip address (read loosely your permission to use the network). The reason it matters, is because if your network connection goes down it's one thing and if just your web goes down, it's another.

I probably misused the word "network."

I don't have a server. I just have a bunch of stuff connected to the router. I'm not computer savvy enough to ACTUALLY network my stuff. :)

To make networking easy the majority of the populatiion connects to their router using a TCP/IP protocol called dynamic host connection protocal, the computer says hello I need an address and the router hands it that address to use for 24 hours, at the end of 24 hours the computer says hello I need and address and the router hands it an address, (unless you have a huge dynamically changing network it probably just renews the lease on the exisiting address).

The reason MrBaldy wants to know if it is your local network (LAN) or internet (WAN) is to trouble shoot where the lease renewal is causing you an issue. Just like your PC gets an address from your router every 24 hours unless you are paying for a fixed IP address from your ISP your cable modem does exactly the same thing your computer does, it talks to the home office and says hey I need an address, the home office leases it an address for 24 hours, wash rinse and repeat, when we had cable internet my internet address usually changed 2 or 3 times per week on the cable modem. I now pay for a static IP address with my uverse service, makes it much easier to connect to my home network so I can access hardware at the house like my PC, a windows server and my as400.

At one point in time our cable modem had the same IP for 5 months, then they began enforcing address changes on lease renewal and wanted outrageous money for a fixed IP, your ISP may well be enforcing adress change on lease renewal for your cable modem in order to prevent people from hosting web services like a website on their home service line that eats up bandwith.

Ok.... I can follow that.

...but... were that the problem, why wouldn't my other puter, also on and connected to the internet at the same time, not be losing connection also?

So, both your computers are losing the internet at the same time or only one? If it's just one computer ... then when it happens open a dos box (start run cmd) then type ipconfig /all > myresult.txt and post the file myresult.txt here.

On Vista click start - type cmd and then click on cmd under programs
