How do you know you need to reboot the computer? What have you tried, other than rebooting, to get reconnected?

I don't know that I have to. I do know that works.

All I've tried is shutting down the game and shutting down the browser and restarting them. That doesn't work.

And, btw, it hasn't happened today.

Try opening CMD as administrator and typing

ipconfig /renew

You might just be losing your DHCP lease for some reason.

IF the PC is on and operating and the DHCP client is working correctly, it should begin the renewal process LONG before the lease expires.

That's assuming the DHCP server is working correctly. My wireless router will occasionally drop the connection to the Internet and I have to renew my DHCP lease in order to get it to work again; I suspect it's a problem with NAT.

"DHCP lease expiring" was the wrong term, but it's possible that the router is trying to do some stateful voodoo and he just needs to reset his connection.

In her case, she says everything else behind the router continues to work and the PC doesn't get DHCP from Cox. Doesn't completely rule out the router, but it reduces the likelyhood.

If she could log on to OSA from the other computer while the affected one has lost it's connection it would be a lot easier to troubleshoot.

Since routers have to maintain information about connection state for NAT, maybe the one machine is using up its allotment of some resource. That would explain why the one computer is losing its connection but the others aren't. I had a horrible D-Link router years ago with a similar problem.

If this only happens when playing the MMO, it may have something to do with how the MMO's networking is implemented.

Or the problem could be almost anything else. Support over the phone/Internet is really difficult beyond "try turning it off and then on again" because you have to get someone who doesn't do computers for a living to perform potentially complex troubleshooting and diagnostic tasks.

My money is on "consumer-grade router giving consumer-grade performance" being the issue.

Consumer entry level routers are the devil for sure. Not much she can do about that for the moment though.

I would certainly give the gaming the boot (no pun intended) for a few days to eliminate that possibility. It could be buggy.

Eliminate the easy stuff.

If DHCP might be a problem, then eliminate DHCP with fixed IP.

I've seen IPv6 intermittantly blow up many small routers, but always with XP. I'd start there.

This.

Geeks love hard problems, so if you're having a network problem we'll overcomplicate a simple situation because it's entertaining for us to screw around with technology. "Oh, you can't get to Google? Welp, time to install WinDBG so we can debug your networking stack!"
