Yup. Big box stores are annoying to buy guns from. Cabelas, bass pro, academy, Atwoods, etc… I’ve had similar experiences in all of them. Takes forever… I prefer to buy from a real gun shop, but sometimes those box stores have deals to good pass up.

About the gun! Is it single action with swing out cylinder? Or double action?
I can answer that. The Sidekick is a SA/DA 9 shot with a swing out cylinder.

I recently decided I wanted some sort of cheapish .22 LR revolver with a swingout cylinder to replace the Ruger Bearcat I have which annoys me to no end every time I have to load it. I also had three $25 Bass Pro gift cards so I went by to see what they had. Everything in the .22 pistol case was not swingout cylinder so I was about to leave when one of the guys asked if I needed help. I mentioned what I was looking for but didn't see it. He took me down to the used guns section and showed me a Diamondback Sidekick. It was "used" only because it was stock transferred from another store. No individual had ever owned it so it was new in the box. It had nine shots and a swing out cylinder so it was just what I needed. I'd never heard of it but I figure I was getting $75 off and how could you really screw up a .22 revolver anyway. It also came with a .22 mag cylinder which is nice though not something I really need.

When I went to check out there were already transactions going on the two laptops they had designated for this purpose. For those guys it was taking forever to get a "proceed" so it took me like 20 minutes before I could even get on the computer. The last gun I bought was a while back and still on the paper forms so this was a bit new to me. I'm pretty techy but found standing at a waist level counter typing on someone else's laptop to be a bit awkward. Plus, I had just gotten glasses without bifocals (a mistake I have since corrected0 so I was having a bit of trouble seeing. I got through it though and got "proceed" in like 10 seconds. The guy was kind of shocked actually. I just laughed and said "they know me well over there."

The guy that had been working with me at the counter went over all my information meticulously, taking almost as long to verify everything as I had spent filling out the online forms. Then he had another guy come over who did the same thing. It was honestly pretty ridiculous but it got worse. After I was "approved" at the counter, I paid. The guy then, without even telling me what he was doing, takes the gun into the back. Apparently this was for yet a third person (the "safe master" I think they called him) to sign off on the whole thing.

While waiting for that step I asked the young guy that had been helping me if he knew how many steps that Bass Pro added to the process. He assured me that everything they had done was required by the ATF in order to buy a weapon.

Finally my gun came from out of the back taped shut which kind of weirded me out. I'd like to have checked inside the box before leaving but when I suggested that the guy seemed genuinely scared of what repercussion might occur if I were to do that so I just did what I was told and left. I was surprised they let me carry it out the front door myself.

All in all it took me like an hour and fifteen minutes to buy one .22 revolver:

• 5 minutes to get help at the .22 pistol counter
• 5 minutes to walk down the length of the counter, see the gun and decide to buy it
• 20 minutes to get on a computer to start the paperwork
• 10 minutes or less for me to complete the paperwork
• 35 minutes of their fiddling around AFTER the NICS came back approved

It's probably not something I will be doing again. :)
I don't know for sure but I would guess, perhaps that Bidens instructions to the ATF to try and shutdown more FFLs for small errors (such as having paperwork errors), might be an explanation for all the double cking.

This is why I don't buy from big box stores. They kneel to all of these stupid rules. I will only buy used face to face or if I have to buy new, from breckinridge arms. Who would though that 3 sets of young kid eyes and some tape could stop something bad from happening.

Bryan, you must understand that the extra steps and delays are required for a purpose. It is absolutely essential that, to an outside observer, (even a small chid) Bass Pro is very, very, very, very serious about their legal, ethical and moral responsibility for releasing a DEADLY WEAPON!!!! into the hands of a mere citizen who was cleared through th NICS for purchase. I am certain that the final two steps were added to the process in compliance with stipulations demanded by ‘Karen Meddler’ (BassPro, Executive Vice President, Safety, Security, Public Opinion and Democrat Party Affairs Director) whom had justified her recommendations saying, “Although I personally do not believe firearms, knives, or potentially dangerous substances should be possessed by members of the general public as they are all stupid and there is no way to assertion where, or not, they are Republicans!!!” “Furthermore, we must all take into consideration the fact that our employee may have conspired with the Subject attempting to obtain a WEAPON!!!!; therefore, the knowledge that the legitimacy of the SUBJECT’s Identification will be verified by an authority figure within our store before its transfer.” “As an afterthought, we should also require that the box in which the WEAPON is contained might be securely wrapped in reinforced strapping tape to prevent instant access.” “Personally, I don’t believe that guns should even exist.” “During my Marxist Indoctrination Program at Harvard University, I said this and the Professor led the entire class in giving me standing ovation!, and David Hogg (himself) gave me a big hug and asked me to meet him in his stateroom at the Boston Harbor Hotel.” “I don’t remember what happened after finishing the first drink, but David told me that I’d had a wonderful time!” “He hasn’t called me back, though…..”

On the plus side, the DiamondBack Sidekick is a great revolver. Also, the frame is basically the same as the Ruger Wrangler and the Heritage. Mine is currently wearing a set of aftermarket wooden Ruger Wrangler grips.

That's good to hear. I honestly didn't know anything about it but bought it because it was the only one with a swing out cylinder and the price was right at $299 (list is $449 on the model I purchased) and I had $75 in gift cards to spend.

one firearm purchase from them and had the same experience. The only reason I even make the purchase was because I had a hefty gift card so it was almost a free purchase for me. I have zero desire to ever purchase another firearm from them and unless I get another hefty gift ca

I'm glad to hear it isn't just me! I doubt I'll ever buy from them again unless I get another gift card but that won't happen most likely because we've quit exchanging gifts with the part of the family that doesn't know me well enough to get that for me.

Both! I looks like the SA guns that don't swing out, but it does!

I can answer that. The Sidekick is a SA/DA 9 shot with a swing out cylinder.

Thanks for confirming. I know that SA can't work as DA but DA usually can also work SA. Or is it always? And did I get that turned around? It's always confusing to me because cocking and then pulling the trigger is two actions but considered SA and just pulling the trigger is one action but is considered DA. Or did I still get that turned around. I know how to work it so I guess that's all the *really* matters.

I mean, I guess in this case nothing happened so their process was a success. Of course it wouldn't have anyway but I guess now they can feel better about it. I did carry it in to the bathroom despite the "no merchandise beyond this point" sign because I figured they didn't want me to pee in the store or the parking lot and didn't want me to leave a gun laying around while I went in without it. I figured if they gave me a hard time I would point out that "merchandise" would be items for sale and this items could not be sold for a year per the forms I had just filled out to buy it.
