Slack, I applaud you for caring about the kid enough to be there for her.

If I were in your place, I would read the sales contract, as LC advises. There is a SMALL chance you will find a hole to exploit. If no such loophole exists, I would advise her that making these payments is her lesson for not doing her research and making an impulsive purchase. Stress that she is overpaying, but she doesn't ever have to do that again. Making contract is a serious bond, one ought not do it lightly. Finally, DO find cheaper insurance, that is crazy high....hopefully the change in the insurance payment will allow her cash flow to stay positive as she pays for her car.

As a bonus, she has a reliable vehicle to get to and from work as she powers out of this deal.

Best of luck to you both!

tell her to go to her bank & refinance for a lower interest rate, pay off the 20% loan in full, make payments to the bank at a much lower (5% or less hopefully) interest rate and get a 5 year loan. that'll cut the monthly payment roughly in half & will be much more manageable. don't coesighgne anything, especially for the daughter of an ex-girlfriend, that just seems foolish. even if the intrest rate doesnt go down, converting it to a 5 year loan will cost her more money in the long run, but thats the price for stupidity if she wants to be able to afford food and rent. the least helpfull, but most honest, advice i'd say is to berate her as angrily as you can for doing something so stupid then tell her to piss off.

something sounds fishy about the insurance price per month. 450 for full coverage on a piece of crap car seems a bit unrealistic regardless of her driving record.

has she had multiple DUIs or suspended licenses/driving while suspended?

vehicular manslaughter while DUI? thats about the only thing i can think of that would raise insurance that much.
