I think it was staged. Rock looked like he wasn't even hit, he seemed totally unphased by it all. He actually leaned in instead of away before the slap, then the "greatest night in the history of television" quip. Smith is a decent actor and could pull off that rant in his sleep. My money is on staged...
Not sure why the Hollywood/stage thing would make it ok, but if you insult a man's wife on the street you're in grave danger of getting (or defending against) a beatdown. And even more so a few decades ago.

I watched the whole thing! I had almost zero idea who the actors are for the most part but I think it’s cool to see awards for professions at the top of their field.
