There is no law or even a protocol to ask that kind of question in OK. I think they are basically asking a general question about safety, maybe they were suggested to do so or it is in their personal interest. With that said I think they should control their questions to falls, drownings, poisoning, vehicle safety issues, household chemicals etc. It seems I remember hearing of a law in florida about doctors being required to ask something about firearms but not sure what the details are though.

I too fail to see how the question is relevant to the way the situation sounds.

even if a person were to be being prescribed a medication known to cause side effects that are attributed to a suicide risk, its no one else's business who owns what, simply make it blatantly obvious, like maybe by verbally expressing the concern that "hey this medication is known for reports of people taking it becoming depressed and offing themselves; SO IF YOU GET THE IDEA TO JUMP OFF SOMETHING, OR EAT A BULLET, PLEASE CALL ME IMMEDIATELY AND STOP TAKING THE MEDS!!"

And as far as an upfront question on a form, i see no reason to ask even if there is a concern that toxic chemicals and matter associated with the use of and cleaning of firearms. if the diagnosis yields something that can be caused by exposure to something related to that genre, then i can see a reason for saying something like "hey, this illness is sometimes caused by the fumes from this known gun cleaning solvent, or from the exposure to lead.... if you have this stuff around, maybe you should think about removing it form contact with the household, and or the air in the household."

just does not make any sense to me. unless i fold up the tin foil hat and start thinking about ways to get information about households with guns who we do not know about yet.. .. .. **insert shifty eyes here**

Because the Journal of American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine and Centers for Disease Control are all virulently anti-gun. They're the ones that come up with these standardized medical questionnaires for doctors to use all around the country. As a part of HIPAA, they have access to the electronic databases formed with these questionnaires and can then use them to promote gun control schemes as a "health measure".

Serious as a heart attack, no tin foil required here. :(

Abstract

[This statement reaffirms the 1992 position of the American Academy of Pediatrics that the absence of guns from children's homes and communities is the most reliable and effective measure to prevent firearm-related injuries in children and adolescents. A number of specific measures are supported to reduce the destructive effects of guns in the lives of children and adolescents, including the regulation of the manufacture, sale, purchase, ownership, and use of firearms; a ban on handguns and semiautomatic assault weapons; and expanded regulations of handguns for civilian use. In addition, this statement reviews recent data, trends, prevention, and intervention strategies of the past 5 years.]

Florida Gun Legislation Will Hinder Pediatricians' Efforts to Protect Children
4/28/2011

[CHICAGO-The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) joins the Florida Pediatric Society and other physicians and medical professionals in expressing grave concern over the Florida Legislature’s passage of a bill to restrict the ability of pediatricians to ask patients and parents simple counseling questions about gun safety without fear of sanctions from the state medical board. The bill awaits the signature of Governor Rick Scott.

The bill will limit pediatricians’ capacity to do what they do best – compassionately and effectively help families care for their children. Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death in children older than 1 year. Pediatricians play a key role in injury prevention by providing anticipatory guidance to parents during office visits to lower the risk of injury in the child’s everyday environment. During these visits, several aspects of the patient’s home are discussed,

including swimming pools, hazardous chemicals, smoke detectors, medications and firearms. These conversations help pediatricians and other physicians to partner with parents to keep their children safe...]

Probably eventually raise health insurance premiums for firearm owners.

yeah, but put it like that and its not necessarily a government conspiracy, its the usual business of some person of a highly official job, using it to try and promote their way of thinking. which in this case is obviously against what we as gun enthusiasts are for.

THIS, is the problem. Mission creep. You're there to provide medically necessary treatment, not nanny the world. I guess they learned doctoring 101 from the same folks that teach US World Police 101. :rolleyes2

US Centers for Disease Control: http://www.cdc.gov/

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (or CDC) is a United States federal agency under the Department of Health and Human Services

http://www.hhs.gov

HHS represents almost a quarter of all federal outlays, and it administers more grant dollars than all other federal agencies combined. HHS’ Medicare program is the nation’s largest health insurer, handling more than 1 billion claims per year. Medicare and Medicaid together provide health care insurance for one in four Americans.

Government conspiracy? Check! :(

And under that at the state level is OKDHS, below is not a "Safety Assessment" for a neglect/abuse screening,
just a standard "house assessment" filled out when any benefits are applied for.

OKDHS "House Assesment" form
04AF004E (DCFS-11)
Assess the physical facilities of house for safety hazards.
1.Are weapons in the household? Yes___ No___
If yes, describe how are weapons stored so a child's access will be prevented.

List weapons.

2.
