Now, how about closest?
I've shot several deer that were 15 ft directly below me, roundball went in the top of the head, exited through the bottom. Didn't have to look for them, and didn't waste any meat.

Closest was 22 yards, with SuperBlackhawk .44 Mag.

It was as satisfying a shot as 400.
Walking the woods and getting close. Open sights, revolver, free standing vs rifle, scope and rest.

I dropped my first ever doe using a 7mm STW 700 Sendero (God I miss that rifle) my dad had set up to shoot out past 1000. 412 yards. Then I went about 25 years of never shooting one past 150 lol

Maybe 25 yards on deer. That was my first white tail. The remainder were less than that. Shots were so close I just stopped taking rifles and started taking 44 mag revolvers. Lost access to that land when our relatives sold it. Haven’t been hunting since.

Great question. With a firearm, probably 15-20 yards using a muzzleloader.

My longest was a buck at about 420 yards. Shortest was a buck at about fifteen feet ... straight down ... with a .357.

Coyote out around 375 yards for a kill shot. Best was 1000 at a competition but only hitting paper. Closest was about a foot. Possum in the hen house.

Longest was 225yds at a slow moving buck left to right. .270win, 130gr core- loc that I reloaded. 90% of deer I've taken have been 60yds or less. Truly enjoy slow hunting wooded areas.

Probably 50 yards. Never had to shoot any farther.
