Horsemeat In The Foodchain

So there is a big scandal in Europe about horsemeat showing up in Burger King and Taco Bell meat.
And now the USDA is set to approve the first horse slaughterhouse in the US for decades.

What is the big deal?

I've never tasted horsemeat. Is it nasty or something?

Lean red meat superior to beef in many ways. I'll never eat it unless I have to.
Same with Kangaroo, rodent, etc.

having grown up on and around ranching operations i have a fondness for horse's that precludes me from looking at them as a food source, how ever on expeditions to far away places to kill indigenous persons i have partaken of horse meat, while not terrible it was a little tough and i much prefer the goats of the region

The only reason I hunt squirrles is to find specimens for my trophy room. Years ago I took two fine fox squirrels to Tuck's Taxidermy in Altus. Tuck says, I guess you want them mounted. I say no, just shaking hands will be fine.

Regardless of where the meat goes to, im glad that they are allowing the slaughter houses to open back up. The horse market Crashed when they last closed them. You couldn't hardly give them away.

I've eaten horse meat in Italy. I thought it had kind of a sweet taste to it. Cooked, and sliced paper thin as an appetizer.

I wouldn't have a problem eating any of it, but I do think it should be labeled correctly and not mixed with beef.
