Yep, 18" is the shortest you can own without filling out ATF paperwork to allow a SBS (short barreled shotgun) and paying the $200 tax mentioned above. If you do that, then you can cut it down to whatever length suits you. It's the same process you use (different form sometimes) to get a machinegun, or a supressor, or short barreled rifle, amongst a few other fun items.

What is the shortest legal barrel you can own? I always thought 18"s was the shortest legal. I love that 12" that DrBaker posted, but didn't think that was legal.

18" is the standard legal minimum. Mine is a properly registered SBS. After I received my NFA tax stamp, I had the barrel shortened to 12".
