Well guys, I was in the Army. And when I was in if a recruit talked back to a DI, he would have found himself on the ground with a sore jaw. It began to change in the 60's. All the boot camps became gentle. Oh,and when I served as a medic across the pond with a marine detachment, they discovered we had had a similiar experience in boot.

That's very true Stan and thanks for your service and sharing too. Even when I went through boot camp in 86 things had already changed to where DI's could no longer (legally) lay a hand on you. Now I hear that they aren't even allowed to swear either.

One thing about it though, even with restrictions such as those, they STILL are able to get their points across. I found boot camp to be much more of a mental game than anything. Sure the physical aspects of it were challenging, but when it all comes down to it, it's still MIND OVER MATTER. If you don't MIND, it don't MATTER. :)

Ya NAVY.. Good food, didn't march much, lots of schooling and learned how to load and fire big guns.

Thanks to you too BReeves... even squids get recognition in my thread. :)

That is one thing about Marine Corps boot camp that isn't really portrayed as much in the movies... there is a significant amount of classroom training as well and it's all taught by DIs so you get to see a little more human side of them. Granted it's still an environment where you have to be on your toes, but not the 100% high stress like filmmakers enjoy showing. Most people have seen Full Metal Jacket and I usually tell them that they got the boot camp scenes pretty much spot on. Of course having a REAL former DI like the Gunny helped too. :)

1977 grad. Sateens starched to stand on their own. Wash racks between the squad bays. Blown out achilles tendon. Mount Mother f**cker. Hand to hand training. Ah......the memories.
