Mercury in Okla Lakes

Its all falling into the same pattern. Just like the oil companies. Demonize them to justify passing new legislation that will tax us to pay for the socialist hand out. Mercury is a no issue a year ago, and now is a big enough issue to put a ban on eating fish?
Natural occuring I can understand. This crap I can't, and I don't have a clue who to contact to protest this.

Dennis I've heard them state not to eat various fish in McGee Creek at various times for a lot more than two years. And the word USED to be that it was naturally occurring. So I'm right there with you. I call BS. They either are lying or don't know for sure. And like I said earlier in this thread the danger levels dictated by the feds are ridiculously low. I can remember in grade school we used these "science kits" and made a working thermometer for a science project. No hazmat suits or any kind of PPE. Can you imagine what the feds would do today? Man they would bring indictments down upon the school administration! Also I heard my grandfather say that they used to play with mercury as kids. He died just short of 90 years old. I don't buy a thing they say anymore because you are right, it's just about more regulation and generating new taxes in the form of fees to feed an ever growing bureaucracy.

My dad worked in a power plant when I was growing up and we used to play with mercury, making copper pennies shiny.
He died short of 80.
I don't advocate anybody handling mercury, as it is toxic, and maybe we were just lucky.
I emailed DEQ today to see what thresholds they were were using to put the ban on.... and have got no results as of yet.

I remember playing with mercury (quick silver) as a child, and my mental acuity is legendary.

Yeah, I have about the same story as some of ya'll. My ol grand dad had about a half gallon of mercury out in his shop that he made medicine out of (old indians taught him, so the story goes). Me and my cousins found it and poured the whole half gallon in our hands and played with it for hours. Someone in the family still has the recipe for the medicine that he made with mercury, always called it 'high power oil'. I used it all through childhood externally, and it worked. I know he used it internally a few times, lived to the ripe old age of 88, granny used it too and died at 94. Not saying mercury isn't dangerous, but... well, I don't know what I'm saying, other than my wanker seems to go up and down with the temperature, maybe a little over exposure to mercury? haha

I can remember the Game Warden at McGee Creek in the early 90's telling us not to eat the bass because of the mercury. If I remember correctly he told my dad and I that it was naturally occurring but that the levels were high in the lake because of logging. He went on to ask us to take all of the small bass home and put them in our garden because of overpopulation.

I got a reply from DEQ. I have't had time to decipher it, but I'll study it and get back to y'all if my attention span will handle it.
