Someone owns the fence. In my case, I didn't own any of the fences around my yard. All of the neighbors own it, therefore I had no say in what type/look they put up and I had three different types. If I did't like it, I could put up my own. I wouldn't have paid jack for it. Now if he would have included you in the decision making process than that is one thing...but since he didn't I wouldn't care.

Ya that's kind of how my house is. All of the neighbors around me put up fences before my house was sold since it was the model home for the neighborhood and ended up being sold late in the cycle. I wasn't the original buyer at that time even.

If I were staying in this house, I'd probably try to work something out with him, but if he would have been a man about things and come to me ahead of time, he would have found out that I was leaving soon and wouldn't be willing to pay for a fence that I would get no benefit from. Then he could either choose to replace it at his cost or wait and talk to the new owners here at some point.

At this point, I've pretty much decided that he can go get bent.

I am facing this right now. The fence that is my neighbors is literally falling down into my yard. I am wanting to put up a privacy fence, and will probably do it myself, but since his dogs are now coming into our yard now. I keep my pits on chains right now until I can get the fence up, so now his dogs are coming into my yard and endangering themselves in the event my dogs get ahold of them. I will talk with him soon, when I get the money together and let you know how it goes.

lol @ fence threads. there was a good one over at calguns for a long while.....we still don't know the result. Op complained, updated a few times after getting recommendations, and disappeared. it drove a few people mad waiting to hear the conclusion(which never came).

I've been through this twice for two sections of my fence and about to have the third discussion in the spring. Each time I approached the neighbor that shares the propertly line and let them know what I would like to do. I got quotes and we agreed on which one to go with. They issued me a check for half(I left it up to them to write it to the fence company or myself) the cost and I paid company.

If I was in your shoes, I would have had the same reaction.

This is how it's done. When my ex and I built, we were one of the first houses in the neighborhood and since we had a dog we needed a fence. There were no neighbors yet so we paid for the fence to be installed. Later, a couple moved in next door and asked if it was ok to tie into our fence. We said sure and ~hoped~ they would offer to pay us a little but they never did. Later we learned the neighbors are wealthy and could have paid for the fence several times over and not even felt it. After all, they own 4 airplanes with one being a P51 Mustang.

No biggie now though. They are good people and I don't even live there anymore but my ex and kids do. I really should take him up on his offer to go up in the P51...
