The appeals process: Lawyer job security. 25 or more years worth.

Then, too, one must consider the other costs of not executing such as the anguish of the victim's relatives. The danger to society if a murderer escapes. The danger to society if a murderer is paroled.

The death penalty is not about whatever the the cost may be; it is about the security of society.

We all remember we had airliner hijacking on a regular bases for 30 odd years, and nothing anyone could do seemed to help. right? Then 9/11/2001 happened, and not even one attempted take over type hijacking has occurred since, WHY IS THAT? Would be hijackers KNOW that no passenger will ever again sit by and be flown into a building! Is there a lesson to be learned here, I suspect there is! School/mass shootings, will continue until WE THE PEOPLE DECIDE WE WILL NOT SIT BY AND BE FLOWN INTO A BUILDING!

Isn't life in prison cheaper than executing? Considering 25 years of appeals for death penalty cases, I'd be surprised if it wasn't more expensive.
Our society needs to make this less attractive/cool, to the brain dead, spoiled brats, seeking a minute of fame! The lap dog news media, is fanning the flames by sensationalizing these LOSERS, to gain ratings! This will continue as long as it seems cool to the brain dead, spoiled brats, that do it!
