What are the advantages and disadvantages of both the .177 and .22 caliber? Is one considered better than the other, I know .22 would be better for hunting but any other reasons?

I have found that .177 tends to be more accurate, unless you have anything more than a light breeze. Can't think of any other major differences. But certainly .22 is better if you intend to hunt with it.

I've never owned a pellet gun and know next to nothing about them, so if my question is stupid, that's why. Can pellet guns be shipped directly to the buyer, or do they need an FFL for transfer?

No FFL's needed for air guns.
