I've actually been griped at for not coming to see folks who were in the hospital because the only notification I got was on Facebook and I don't check it that often (no call, text, or any other notification - just facebook).

We had to tell the family member that with 3 kids and a ton of stuff going on, Facebook probably isn't the best way to update us on emergency notifications about hospital-admitted family members.

I have family like this -- actually my entire family is like this ... I don't check Facebook and I don't answer the phone ... Why?? Because I simply do not care anymore ... I don't wish anything ill on these people, I just don't want to be drug into their drama ... My life got so much better when I stopped trying to figure out how to get them to treat me like they expected me to treat them ...

"Estranged" can sometimes be a very useful, calming and beautiful word, can't it? On it's face it doesn't really look like it has those qualities, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Yessir, it is ... :)

Sorry Seedy... hang in there buddy and I hope your Grandmother recovers quickly.

This. I'm sorry for taking my little walk down memory lane and not saying this. Seems they still get under my skin a little, even now -- after all these years. Oh well, practice makes perfect! :)

I found out my dad died by calling the hospital to check on him. I was flying home, got delayed til late on Saturday, called Sunday and found out from a doctor. He died Saturday afternoon and no one called me til I called them

Not trying to one up anybody, just reminded me of when my dad passed.
We were not on good terms when it happened. But the way I heard about it was through my wife who ran into a sister in law at the grocery store. She called me to let me know. Unfortunately I was on the way to summer camp with about 25 boy scouts. The funeral was the next day and I couldn't get anyone to feel in for me on such short notice so I didn't make it. Probably could have with a couple more hours notice but that didn't happen.

Dang BB! I didn't know we had the same family!

Sorry, Seedy that you were treated this way. After awhile (20-30 years) you get used to getting info third hand.

Thanks Everyone! Grandma's doing alright for now. They think she'll be able to go home in a few days. I appreciate the positive thoughts and energy sent my way. I was just wanting to rant a little but forgot how great the people here are!

The whole thing about this is I get along great with my family. I wouldn't consider us "estranged" at all. Not to say we all dont have our normal "family moments" every now and then.

My mother did TRY to text me, but for some reason her texts aren't going through to me or my Brother (Verizon to Sprint!) I guess I'm really just more aghast that the "social norm" has shifted so far away from just "picking up the phone". It's becoming more common to text, post, blog or tweet major life events than to call. Maybe I'm just getting old (early thirties) but there are some things that require a phone call or even better a "face to face".
