Direct democracy doesn't work. Direct democracy allows no checks against herd mentality, and therefore marginalizes the minority who may be the group that's actually right.

Which is exactly why the founders created a republic, the electoral college and made it that senators were appointed by the states and not elected.

Unfortunately elected officials are well aware of the herd mentality and how to manipulate it thus senators are now elected, the powers of the electoral college have been abrogated and regulated by the states to the point where it is a mere formality and the unwashed, uneducated masses labor under the misguided notion that our nation is a democracy.

So now elected officials gain their seats and their power by pandering to those with no dog in the race other than who will steal the most from the makers and give it to the takers.

That said: Other than a true republic, which tends not to last very long, mankind has yet to come up with a better alternative.

You're not referring to the 17th Amendment, are you? Because that's not what caused the popular vote of Senators rather than legislature appointment.

But under the 10th Amendment, shouldn't the states be free to determine how to count votes in federal elections?
