I said I was going to put in for the draw hunts last year but didn’t, because I still look at them as something more for Oklahomans even though I see on other message boards there’s a ton of out of staters that apply. The one that really intrigues me is the McAlester hunt, so I bought a second hand recurve yesterday and am starting down a rabbit hole into traditional archery. This may or may not work, because I tore my right bicep (as in tore it loose) about 15 years ago and never got it fixed. I can pull a 65# compound bow, but it gets pretty painful after only a few shots.
What I bought is a “parts” bow that consists of a Bivouac Backland riser with 45# Samick ILF limbs, and I’ve already been advised to buy a set of 30# limbs and build up (ie spend more money). I think I got into the bow cheap enough that if this experiment doesn’t work out I won’t lose too much, because I got the whole bow for $150 less that what just the riser sells for new. Now I have to buy arrows and accessories, so even though I got a decent deal on the bow, I’m sure I can turn this into a money pit.

All that being said, I have a few months to practice and see if this is going to work for me before I decide if I’ll put in for the draw next year. :anyone:

Don’t they allow “disabled” hunters to use recurve crossbows there? I’m not calling you disabled, but removing and poorly reattaching a bicep might qualify you in this instance. Fairly sure you get primo spots with a disability too. “Disabled” draw odds go up as well, or at least used to when my dad was putting in for them.

Everything hunting related is an expensive rabbit hole- even when it’s cheap. I’ve got a full size 28lb trainer you’re welcome to try out and train on if you like. I think it’s 62” long. It might need a new string, might not too.

I've been to MCAAP 7x. Interesting place for sure. Extremely low odds for success. The number of hunters there on each hunt became extreme imo with the quality passes given for hog tails and does harvested imo. The experience was great. Once Bill Starry retired, it wasn't/isn't the same.

I know a lot of people consider minor inconveniences in physical abilities as disabilities, but I’m not one of them. If I can’t do this to a near 100% proficiency, I’ll abandon the project, because I’m not drawing a bow on a deer unless I know I can kill it efficiently.
