Two things that are very important - adjustability and how long it is rated for sitting per day. Most of the chairs in that price range are only going to be rated for a couple of hours.

Right now, I'm looking for a good chair. I've got a 4-hour rated one with adjustable armrests that I paid $200 or so for a little over two years ago. It was fine when I was working only 20-30 hours a week. Now I'm working 80+ hours most weeks, and the seat on this chair hardens up by the end of the day.

So I'm searching for something with a non-mesh seat (and preferably non-mesh back) rated for 8 hours or better with a full suite of adjustments and still at a reasonable price. When sitting in front of a computer all day (and sometimes night) is how you make money, you start to look at it more as being a form of health insurance (i.e. $1000 for a chair may save $3000 worth of chiropractor bills).

I took myself to Staples and test-drove all the display chairs. I didn't even look at the pricetag until I narrowed it down between two.
Turns out things felt about even between a $150 chinky chi-com and some $450 furniture brand 'signature' line. I picked the cheaper one, and have sat in it for up to 15 hours without pain. It has held up, too. It creaks like a bastard, and the plastic covers for the screw heads fall out, but the supports have held up really well.

Don't buy a brand or recommendation. Just go try some out, see what feels the best, and go from there. Just because it is expensive doesn't mean that it is good. Like others mention, price isn't the important thing... not destroying your back and maintaining posture control, is.

IMO... no such thing as a chair that is good for your back. Sitting on a swiss ball can actually improve hip and back mobility though. If you sit a lot, regularly stretching your hip flexors will help get the stress off your lower back too.

Maybe not the answer you're looking for, but I thought I'd offer that.

I have a friend who swears by the ball chair too, but he's full on into the biking fitness etc... so it fits in with that.

I personally love the Aeron chairs like I used to have at work, but I just have some cheapo right now. The thing that helps me is to actively and consciously remember not to slouch and purposefully sit up straight so that I'm not straining my back.

Another +1 for the Aeron. I used to have back issues until I got one of those chairs for home; I like it so much that I paid out of my own pocket to have another one at my office. They wouldn't go for the purchase when I told them how much it was
