I think this is an excellent opportunity for the citizens of America to begin looking at how many of the federal jobs need to be farmed out to private industry.

You might be surprised if you knew how many Federal agencies have been downsizing these past few years due to shrinking budgets, leaving the rest of their employees saddled with more work for the same pay. Early retirement packages, elimination of vacant positions, and transferring of employees to a more needed slot are some of the things they've done to manage the reduced payroll. Other things they've done is to not allow field work that would require overnight lodging, emphasize training via the Internet rather than at remote physical locations, and shutter small offices, relocating the workers to a larger building shared with other agencies. A recent mantra at these agencies is to prioritize the work, with the least important tasks simply not getting done for lack of time and resources.

Yes, there's still a lot of pork that can be trimmed, but a lot has already been cut.

It is always a good time to do that - we should never get lax.
I am a current Federal civilian employee (GS) and a retired USAF officer - so I am not a disinterested third party, however I am US citizen first. I don't see any reason why I should be paid for the 4 days I was furloughed this month. I would like to be paid for the labor I am supplying right now rather than getting an IOU but IF a delay will force a trimming of government then I would be content to wait a little longer - I just don't think that will happen.

The main problem is not that individual offices are wasting resources or padding payrolls - generally that is not happening. In fact, it has been very hard to justify and hire permanent employees for a couple of years now. The real issue is that the overall Federal government has assumed, improperly in my opinion, and unwisely as well, too many tasks - each of which generates sub-tasks and regulatory requirements, etc. requiring some kind of government mechanism to enact/enforce/distribute/monitor. This bureaucracy grows for a reason - want to shrink the monster? Stop feeding it.

I believe it was a unanimous vote to pay the furloughed workers. To me this is vote buying plain and simple. Every single representative voted to spend our money to pay for work that was not done in order to avoid losing the vote of federal employees in their districts.

Not nearly as many as need to be eliminated completely, with a corresponding return to the states the responsibility and authority to determine the need and manner of the duties in the future.

They're so precious.

Ummm...Yeah...You're not really adding anything worthwhile to the discussion...

Lets see if I have this right, The gov. couldn't pay the people to keep the memorials and Fed parks open but they can pay them for the time they sit at home during the shutdown once the nitwits in Wash. reach a deal.

Add to the fact that we are also paying our senators and congress to perfrom a job that they have not done in years in passing a budget. I am also a .gov employee and retired Air Force that would not have a problem not being payed for the multiple times we have been furloughed this year but am sick and tired of our government not doing their job and getting payed for it. I am a dedicated Republican that will not be voting for one incumbent come election time.
