Alright, given all the input, I'm looking at either a Poulan Pro, Husqvarna (makes Poulan), or cub cadet.

Cub cadet offers a Kohler motor at a 1500 price point where the others are at 2000.

The quotation 2 remaining is: should I pay extra (200+) for a v-twin motor or is the single cylinder fine for < 1 acre?

For a measly $200 extra, I'd opt for the twin. You won't regret it.

sorry but your JD D105 is a good quality but still a low end riding mower with a 17.5hp BS engine .. weight 445 lb with belt-driven mechanical CVT transmission. no comparison to commercial grade mowers like Case/Ingersoll or JD with hydrostatic drives, kohler/onan engines and weight 650lb to 950lb range. high end JD mowers like 455 will have 22hp 3 cylinder Yamar diesel engine, hydrostatic and weight 950lb ...

much rather spend say $1,500 for a used Case/Ingersoll or Ford NewHolland with low hours/excellent condition vs same $$ for a new low end mower. but it's not for everyone .. especially if one is not mechanically inclined. some folks would be better off starting off with a new machine.

most commercial grade mowers if kept in good condition will hold their values for a long time.

I am very mechanically inclined.I made my Troy- Bilt mower last 13 years,so I'm not worried about my John Deere.

13 years isn't a great measure.
My old JD is parked but still runs like a top. It came from the JD store originally with a Kawasaki water cooled engine. Its 20 years old. Bought me a newer model that has 4 wheel steering so I parked the other one. The plastic hood is broken and long gone so it looks like heck but it'll mow for days. Your Lowes JD might make it 13 years before you have to throw it away. Years is a bad measure anyway, hours is more of a measure of its use.

I went with a cub cadet 42" mower, single cylinder. I'm not mowing more than about half an acre and felt the larger motor was overkill. It is a courage motor, and I did see reviews on it, but the warranty is pretty solid for 3 years, unlimited hours. For 1500, I think I'll be happier with it than spending 3k to mow what's possible with a push mower (which I'm keeping).

I appreciate all of the input as it did help narrow down what I should be considering given the situation.

now this is a hoss .. JD445 with low hours in Tulsa Craigslist with 22hp Kawasaki gas .. JD 455 has the 22hp 3cyl Yanmar diesel engine. both are rated at 22hp, but the diesel equipped 455 has way more grunt and more desirable.

Why do you need a riding lawn mower for less then an acre? I've got a Troybilt self propelled walk behind that does just fine on my 1 acre lot. Seems like a waste of money.

Time saved with a riding mower can be used for other things, like spending time with family or earning money.
