I chose the M1 Garand for nostalgia and because it was a kick ass rifle for its day!
And it still is!!!! I picked it too!!! Plus I don't concider any rifle firing a cartridge less than .308/7.62X51 a battle rifle.

I think people are getting caught up in the term "battle rifle." By most strict definitions, the only real battle rifles on the poll are the M1A/M14, FN FAL, Garand, and G3.
And of those choices I picked the FAL. It has the longest service history, is the most prolific and has the most widespread use, and has a great reputation for reliability. There's not much you can't do with the FAL.
And you can mod and build the FAL yourself. Plenty of surplus parts and mags also.

Which is exactly what I did! Imbel parts kit on an Imbel gear logo receiver, with Penguin furniture and a few other 922r compliant parts. Turned out very nice!
