I'll go a step further and say we need to abolish political parties all together. They serve no purpose other than to stifle those who oppose their power structure.

They do far more than that. They organize constituency, allow for funding to publicize platforms, they allow bargaining groups and compromise within legislative bodies, and they allow the public to make unified election decisions.

I'm not saying that the system is perfect, and political parties have their drawbacks, but they for sure have their place, as well. A hodgepodge of candidates would often leave voters bewildered, with a mix of issues that they do and don't agree on spread over a wide selection of candidates.

I voted to keep Plantations in the name of Rhode Island...

Voters have the opportunity to change the state's official name from "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" to just "Rhode Island."

Oh wait....

Deja, wake up. The "parties" are run by the same people.....the ones who OWN and CONTROL most everything. "Political parties" were created to keep the populace divided, constantly accusing and pointing fingers at the "other side", while those pulling their strings smile knowingly at each other...

Someone made a great analogy once: American politics resembles a room full of people and a thermostat that can only be changed once every 2 weeks. 80% of the people in the room have a side they pick - it's evenly split between hot and cold. 20% of people are fairly undecided and go with what feels right at the time. After 2 weeks of freezing cold, the 20% flock towards the thermostat and vote to change it to hot - it's a landslide victory. 2 weeks of scorching temperatures and they vote overwhelmingly to change it back to the cold. They have a short memory and are not sure that a middle ground exists.
