Heck, for $20 an hour, I will take care of my own retirement and vacation!

If an old fat man won't scare your kids, I'll be your Huckleberry!

I would pay $20 an hour if the sitter can do a few things:

make sure the children eat
get kids to bed on time
have a professional attitude
maybe a little study session
feel comfortable with her

And for all you whining about $20 an hour, you make it sound like the sitter is being paid 40 hours a week to do that, which comes out to more than $38k a year.

I don't even have kids but if $20 an hour for a few hours means I have peace of mind that my kids are safe and taken care of while me and the wife are out, then I have no problem paying that.

There is a lady at our old church who took care of our 3 kids for $10 an hour whenever we went out and they were in the best hands possible.

Y'all need to look for some alternatives unless you just have too much money laying around, in which case, I'll be happy to care for, teach, feed and entertain your kids 24/7. I'm a former Marine, so they will not only be in bed on time, but their rooms will be straightened and cleaned as well. I can personally handle up to a platoon sized group, so bring 'em on.

It's easy to get caught up in some emotional game over childcare where you end up paying way to much for your own PERCEIVED peace of mind.

We take our infant son (10 mo.) to a daycare at a private christian school. It costs us $175 a week, and he goes 5 days a week, about 8-9 hours a day. It's 4 kids to a teacher, so by my calculations, they would make something like $17 an hour, before the school takes out their overhead, and that's for certified professionals. I wouldn't pay a college kid more than $10 an hour if you ask me.
