What was your first "expensive" gun?

An Ed Brown - Kobra Carry. Bought it about 8 years ago when I had better health, fewer bills, and less sense. I wanted one for awhile, but rather than shopping around, I wanted it right then and had some cash burning a hole in my pocket, so I overpaid at H&H. I still have the price tag that came with it!



Around 2 years ago, I traded it to a guy in Tulsa for a nice 6" Python and a 3rd gen Colt SAA.

It was a Sears Roebuck brand .22LR. that was passed down to me. It wasn't that the gun cost me, but after the boat accident, I hired a team of divers to try and recover it for me. They were not successful so I found an advertisement for a boat and operator that had some real sophisticated electronics that claimed to be able to map the bottom. After exhausting several thousands more on the futile efforts to recover the firearms including the semtimental .22LR. I have given up.

Smith & Wesson Model 25-5 in 45 Colt. Presentation target stocks, 5.75" barrel, and German proof marks.

I couldn't have afforded it if I hadn't had trade bait at the time.

Adjusted for the inflation of time period and budget, I'd say it's one I picked up on here. A Saiga 12, bullpuped with the Kushnapup stock, a 20 round drum and some stick mags for I think 1150 several years ago. Probably one of the only things I have I've paid at or near fair market for, but I really love that thing. Don't shoot it much since USSA started getting all anti-shotgun though.

My most expensive outlay was for one of the first 4" Springfield XD's sold in this state, far more than a decade ago. Paid full MSRP back then, and that was a hell of a lot of money (I was just about to retire, and Wifey and I had a few words about my purchase. Daisy was a tiny puppy who voiced no opinion). I've since purchased a shotgun, a hunting rifle, and several handguns... none of which, even adjusting for inflation, cost as much as that first XD. But folks, that is one hell of a fine sidearm, and I've been enormously pleased with it all these years. Over 15,000 rounds through it, and - with new springs and roll pins - it's still going strong!

My newest AR pistol build. So far, this is what I've put in it:

Now, you may notice I didn't list a lower parts kit. That's because I used the CMMG lower parts Kit my son won at the January, 2015 AR build party in Tulsa. He isn't interested in building ARs, so he gave the kit to me. I also haven't included magazines as I have some left over from my first AR (sadly lost in a tragic pawnshop accident--I didn't have the money to get it out of hock.) I am also using the Magpul BUIS sight set I bought for my first AR but took off when I got a cheap Walmart red dot.

I am planning to add some more accessories to the pistol as I get the money. They will include:

• Magpul B.A.D.
• Vickers Tactical sling
  
• Ambidextrous Safety Lever
• Flashlight
  
• Red Dot Sight--I'm leaning towards the SIG Sauer Romeo5.
• Magazines suitable for .300 BLK--either the Magpul Gen 3 .300 BLK magazines or D&H aluminum magazines.

I'm also considering one other thing. I have a problem with charging an AR and in researching possible solutions the simplest solution I've found for this is the Devil Dog Concepts Hard Charger side charging adapter. However, this will probably be the final touch on my pistol. Also, I would like suggestions on a good weapon-mounted light that's less than $200--preferably around $150 or less. I'm aware that by the time I'm finished, I might have close to $1,000 in the gun. Somehow, I feel I'd be justified in spending that much.

Edit: I just looked at that Springfield Edge PDW. I feel better about what I've spent and am about to spend.

Probably an Aero Precision AR-10 in .308 . . . ended up selling it. That thing was way too heavy.

That's awesome! That takes me back, man... I am glad to hear that.



My most expensive guns... well... it comes in stages, as life evolves, right?

I guess the first time I really "splurged" to buy a gun was a Springfield 1911 V10 Champion I got here, I think for about $750. For me, at the time, that was quite a big deal. Also my first AR, which was a RRA I spent around $800. Also a Ruger Super Redhawk .44 with 7 3/4" barrel for around $800. Those were all around the same time, within a year or so and marked a time when I finally started making a decent amount of money moonlighting in residency.

Next, was when I built my SBR AR in .300AAC. I planned that as my sweet baby, had it custom Cerakoted, higher end parts, SBR stamp and suppressor as well. All in with the can and stamps probably landed me a shade over $3k.

Then early this year I built my first custom long-range, that one... Well, I dunno, there were a lot of ancillary costs to building a nice reloading setup to go with it. But the gun itself probably came in around $6k, plus scope which was a cheapie, but also the best and most expensive scope I've ever bought.

And now due to the 'rona, I may end up having to put it on the market just to survive, after less than 100 rounds through it at the Ponca range day. I'm hoping not... trying to decide if it comes to that if I sell the Z or the rifle. <sigh>

But hey, things can be replaced, right? Right.
