Something interesting happened last night...I heard some strange noise around my house around 3am (I was up to grab a drink) and usually it is DEAD QUIET around my house. I looked out my back window and the back security light was lit up (Not uncommon as trees are all around and it sometimes picks them up)...I live on a Golf course, so my house is open in the back to a Fairway which makes the back of my house open.

There is a false sense of Security sometimes because the house is open on all 4 sides that it seems unlikely that it would be a target (easy to see by neighbors) and my neighborhood is gated with Manned Security 24/7 and only one gate in (Non-residents are admitted 1 by 1 and their information is written down), so I have never had this concern before of the "late night" intrusion.

Sound was really weird, almost distant, but I knew it was on my property. It wasn't constant and after it got my attention it went away but I couldn't ignore it.

Here is where I ask my question (I answered it immediately at 3am):

When you know that you are walking outside (with a Family inside) and you don't know what's going on - but you actually have the fear that you could be stepping into danger what would you grab?

This is what I have sitting at the ready (Loaded and secured in my house in different rooms) I had the ability to make a split second decision and grab whichever I wanted before going outside at 3am alone and the hair was standing up on the back of my neck:

My answer surprised me. I always thought I would grab a suppressed gun (Saves hearing and no flash - both of which I thought would be to my benefit if I ever had to protect my home against BG) - but the FIRST thing I went to grab was the 870MCS and I did so without ANY hesitation. If I would have answered this question on this forum I would have said the AR, but when I was amped up and knew that I was going outside ALONE and possibly confront someone it was a completely different answer. I guess, in retrospect, that I felt most secure with BUCKSHOT and a FLASHLIGHT. I had my cell in my hand with 911 dialed in and ready to hit "Send". I can only imagine what I looked like in Boxers and tennis shoes (I was smart enough to put them on) with that Shotty.

Long story short, I have a Koi Pond and the pump had evidently lost prime for a minute and the sound I heard was water and air getting pumped trying to regain prime (which, by the way is a very weird sound at 3am coming from behind your house in the dark with a security light tripped near it)

What would you grab, and why?

I think I am with your suppressed thought. I would have grabbed anything quieter to start, just to save my ears. I am a delicate flower.

So here's my question:

If a would be intruder is not actually in your home, and you go outside to seek him/her/it out, gun in hand, are you not brandishing at the very least? This is just a legal question.

I have thought of that before, but I wasn't "seeking anyone out" but going outside at 3am due to "something" on my property and my wanting to be able to defend myself against possible badguy(s).

The beauty of the answer, is that if nothing is a threat I simply walk back inside, if there is a threat, well then, I'm glad I'm able to defend myself...
