Yeah, anything after the Black album pretty much sucks, and St. Anger was the nail in the coffin for me.

Otherwise, I think a lot of people don't like Hetfield's opinions on being able to purchase music digitally.

And Lars comments about it on MTV, Southpark even did an episode on it.

I've always lumped Metallica into the general musical category of "lame hair bands" like Nelson, Winger and Poison.
A few people whose musical judgment is usually reliable have told me no, Metallica actually has talent. Accordingly, instead of automatically switching to another station when a Metallica song comes on, I've tried to give them a fresh listen on several different occasions. My hope was that I'd be able to pick out what separates them from, say, Cinderella or Twisted Sister.
Unfortunately, I can't hear it. They just sound like any other dated, corny and over-produced band taking itself way to seriously. Sorry Metallica fans, I guess this hater is just gonna hate.

I will never understand people who talk trash about "selling out" or any of that crap. Every, and I mean EVERY band ever formed had hopes for success and stardom. I don't think they sold out, their style changed. Lars did drive some changes that were less than ideal, but Kirk made sure it didn't change too much. I love the early stuff, got my first metallica tape (a bootleg of Kill 'em ALl) in '88 when I was 13. Changed my life. I think it is hilarious when people make stupid comments like "they were better drunk". Really? You would rather they fully destroy their lives so you can have a new CD? James is a true hot rodder, armani clothes or not. Lars comes from money, hell he was a semi-pro tennis player as a kid. Lars has been very clear that he regrets the napster thing, he was caught up in controlling everything Metallica, he has apologized over it repeatedly. If you like Led Zeppelin and know their history you will know that LZ doesn't care about their fans, in fact Robert Plant has said repeatedly that he makes music for himself, he could not care less about the fans. Talk about a douche. LZ doesn't allow their music to be used in movies, they sued the studio over the movie Dazed and Confused. In the end, they lost. They let caddilac use their music in a commercial after they paid LZ a butt load of money.

I like how all you haters out there have remained the same since junior high, you never changed at all, right? I bet you are still flipping burgers too. If you don't like the music, just say that, it isn't for everyone, but don't use stupid phrases like "sold out" to belittle THE GREATEST METAL BAND IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason Metallica sucks is this...

Bay City Bangers became famous on tape trading via snail mail... Then Metallica sued their fans when tape trading went digital.

Yeah, anything after the Black album pretty much sucks, and St. Anger was the nail in the coffin for me.

Otherwise, I think a lot of people don't like Hetfield's opinions on being able to purchase music digitally.

Yup. The answer to the question "why do people hate Metallica" has nothing to do with their getting popular, or the newer albums, or the dudes getting older. It's friggin' Napster and their petty lawsuit. And not even that they sued, but the premise they used.

It is therefore sickening to know that our art is being traded like a commodity rather than the art that it is.

Except, that SELLING your albums for 18 bucks a pop is trading it like a commodity. Sharing it with peers online is FAR LESS objectifying than saying people have to get it at Tower or Best Buy to be able to enjoy it.

Hypocrites indeed.
