Alot of houses are insulated with blown paper insulation as well.

Personally when i know im gonna be out in the cold, its wool for me. I prolly have 20pr of them lifetime basspro merino wool socks. Got some old wool bibs and a wool vest i picked up at a gunshow. Also use them shiney pants things the bicycle racers wear, use them like long johns. Old wool glove inserts from milsurp store. Now if i could find a cheap wool elmer fudd hat id be set.

if you want a very good built elmer fudd hat check out CC filson.I have one ,love it,last forever.

Yeah, 100% cotton's not a great choice, especially from the waist up, if you're going to live outside for awhile, like extended backpacking or repeating 1776 arm in arm with Alex Jones. There's a lot of information for layering on the Interwebs. Army guys wear a 50/50 cotton/nylon blend as either a second layer or third layer for durability and livability. I figure the army guys know best. Stay away from goose down except for walking around Aspen looking for movie stars or you're at high altitude in the Himalayas.

The only thing I've ever been issued that was a 50/50 cotton/nylon blend is socks and BDUs. The socks are F&cking worthless in cold weatherand most other times too in my opinion. I've purchased my own merino wool socks. The FITs brand are my favorites and are American Made. All our cold weather gear is Polartec of varying weights(silk weight base layer, waffle pattern mid layer, happy suit and fleece) and Gore Tex. Our wet weather gear is a fabric similar to Gore Tex, but can't remember what it is. All of it is light weight, but will add up. Most guys will find a combination of those that work for them. All of it can be found at surplus for pretty reasonable prices. Cotton Kills is a pretty good mantra, but I know for fact that some Nordic military forces use it in limited amounts.
