For a brief time I carried without a round chambered. As I became familiar with drawing from my concealed holster, I started carrying with a round chambered.

That's why I don't like mechanical safeties. I saw a video of a jewelry dealer draw his gun when he was held up, but he couldn't remember to flip off the safety so he got shot and robbed. He only lived because the bad guy ran out of ammo before he put the gun to his head. I wonder if he got a Glock after that.
