If this happens it will be 90 percent cross country and would take about 15 hours to get home I understand what your saying but I was thinking if I had to eat along the way squirrel or other small game there would be nothing left to eat and the rifle and ammo would be lighter to carry I’m no spring chicken anymore
22lr and 17hmr are not the only rifles I own lol this was just started as a discussion on 22lr I’m pretty sure I’m aware of what it will be like if shtf lolUnfortunately man, you and 10 million people between you are going to have the same idea.
Back when the Allies invaded Germany, the mass exodus of German citizens fleeing border cities/towns created a swath 8 miles on either side of the autobahns. Vehicles that broke down or ran out of fuel were just left, and the occupants just started foraging off of farms/land/houses close by. 8 miles was about as far as they would venture off the highway in unfamiliar territory.
I hate to say it, but I would bet that you will be 200x more likely to run into armed people with bad intentions than you will squirrels.
Experts say society is 9 meals away from total anarchy. People whose kids haven't eaten in three days will do some pretty crazy stuff to get them food/water. Unfortunately this is why plans to trek back home on foot are far less likely to succeed than the preparers hope.
Best bet is to ensure that you have the fuel to never stop.
If you really want a gun, something like a shorter rifle in 5.56 or 7.62x39 is probably going to be your best bet. A good padded sling and vest will help a lot too.
