What I use for metals which do not corrode when in contact with iron/steel (with dissimilar metal corrosion such as seen in steel screws in aluminum), is red jewelers rouge on an oiled cloth, which is fine enough it does not scratch gold, but which will also put a mirror polish to steel already at a fine finish, also to polish and deburr knife edges on a cardboard or leather strop. Given the everpresent dust around here where no flat surface is truly non-scratching, such work on the 681 would be a waste of time. One of my early motivations on my wicked mex carry ways was to (totally successfully) dodge all the firearms finish wear from holsters with their inevitable embedded grit (and attack by tanning salts with leather). My daily drivers stay nearly new appearing, including my 1976 Blackhawk which would pass for a dealer case sample with light handling marks, and despite untold thousands of rounds. I put more marks on my guns through cleaning whoopsies than from carry, but it IS important to clean under grips when sweating buckets in more humid climes such as my semi-tropical Gulf Coast origins where stainless rusts with regularity and blackpowder rusts/browns guns as you shoot.
Ahhh yes. The old red jeweler’s trick. I had forgotten about that. Red jewelers rouge crumble/ground up in a can of brass. Shaken not stirred… A Marine’s fast track to highly polished brass. A trip down memory lane.

You can keep the mess down by just buying a peel-away stick of Vigor's which I can vouche for as for finess, an oiled/waxed cloth wets/dissolves it when rubbed on end of stick, applies to cloth, makes only an oily slurry where desired/rubbed, and no abrasives going where not desired..

Was shooting mine this morning with the 158s, the highlight closing act (the rest were lowlights) was the skinny little Red Bull can dredged from trashcan and place on the 50yd berm where I went 5 for 6 with the round 5 miss visible 2"high/left, and round 6 crushing the can...a confidence inspiring handgun, which is all important when it comes to hitting.

PS- did you ever actually make use of the lanyard attachment? If I were still young and going places where I might take a tumble down a steep wooded slope, I'd have such an item, or was a combat swimmer, but the reworked 1911 used on a fast rope aerial while playing "Looking for Noriega" did not have a lanyard, (and could have used one).
No, I never had the chance to do it because when I started this thread I was in relatively decent physical shape, but soon after, I went downhill. Ideally, I'd liike to do some of the things that I stated in my OP (and if I work really hard at getting back in shape, I might be able to) but that's something for the future.

I know all about that...was chatting with an older woman as to how getting older was not all it was cracked up to be, and she snapped back, "It's sure not for sissies!", where I immediately wondered if she meant me.
On the 681, was not kidding as to it displacing other guns, as with guns have been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, and in many cases, wouldn't wanna do it again, and now shoot enough just to keep my hand in, generally just stick with one handgun, and likely will be ditching most others as superfluous to needs or even wants.
On getting back in shape, also have undertaken that and have done right well, but never will be young again minus a whole body transplant.
