Ruger or Smith. I will add I still go with a 1911 with out the firing pin block. Series 70 all the way!

My Smiths are far more accurate than I am.
Just about any of today's guns will out shoot the shooter. In the price range you stated , Colt, Springfield Loaded or Range Officer, Sig, Ruger. You have a lot to choose from. You need to find and hold as many as you can to make your choice. For around $1500 you can get a LNIB Les Baer, and of course for a couple of thousand more a Brown or Wilson. Also, what are you going to use it for? If to carry, you might want to look at a LW Commander. A full size Government can get heavy.
If I was buying a 1911 I think I'd buy a Ruger SR1911 and a Kimber .22 conversion.
I am really liking the Ruger so far although I have fired a round out of it yet. Just feels so good in the hand. Well balanced and tight.
