Gunbroker has it all wrong. Sniping is the best part of online auctions.

I agree 100%. Additionally, that 15 minute rule can really be an inconvenience. Let the damn thing end on time!

Imagine a Christine's or Sotheby's auction conducted along the lines of an eBay snipe:

"The current bid on this lovely Renoir painting is $2,125,000. Do I have any more bids? Anyone? Going... going..."

"I bid $2,125,001!"

"Sold! To this person for $2,125,001!"

Sniping sucks, plain and simple. Especially if the program allows you to bid one penny higher than a honest bid.

I object to the characterization "honest bid." It is meant to imply that a snipe is a dishonest bid. Remember, it's not really cheating if you want it a little more than the other guy.

It's cheating if you don't type in the bid yourself but rely on a program to bid just a little more. If you want it more than the other guy, put in your max bid and live with it.

Sniping doesn't always work. I've lost plenty of auctions because my top bid wasn't enough. I never bid up the auction. I throw in my price and let it ride. Placing your bid in early is always subject to the seller bidding up his own auction with another account. If you're mad you lost, then you didn't bid the price you were willing to pay.

Exactly. If someone comes in at the last second and bids $10 and you would have given $10.50 but had only bid $9.50, then that's on you. You should have bid $10.50 to begin with.

Sniping's the only way to play eBay. I manually snipe, so my morals are intact. ;)

Have you tried calling Smith and Wesson? I've bought a couple of sets of grips from them. No hassle involved.
