I'm guessing it's the small town schools with limited budgets making money off football?
I have no problem with football, just the place it's been given in school.

I agree with Billybob. My high school (Davis) isn't big by any means but everyone got so worked up over football games it was rediculous. The coaches had to teach so they usually had the history classes and although they knew what they were teaching there was a general pass given to the players. Not that players being favored wasn't any different in college.

The word "hero" has been misused for so long that it may eventually follow the same fate as the word "racist". People throw "racism" and "racist" around so much that the accusation is meaningless. But, I have my own definition of "hero". I define hero as somebody who does the right thing. I inform students that if they are doing the right thing, they can be a hero in somebody's life every day. In our daily walks, simply doing the right thing can be a heroic action as we influence others. Not that anybody asked, but my definition of "superhero" is somebody who does the right thing ALL the time. So, in reality there are no superheroes. But, I strive to be one. We should all strive to be superheroes. Carry on.

The "war" analogy has long been applied to sports, i.e. "doing battle on the gridiron" "fighting a fierce opponent"

Sports stars have always been called "heros" just a different intended meaning. Even 30+ yrs ago as a kid in school I remember being asked who your favorite sports 'hero' was.

People dont mean disrespect to our military by it.

Just because they aren't to you doesn't mean they aren't heroes to someone else.

This! A hero isn't only someone who saves lives or fights for our freedoms everyday. There are several acts of honor, integrity and courage that make a person a hero to others. Some as simple as motivating someone to work harder, succeed and change their path in life. If that is one student being motivated by the actions of another on the field...then a hero he is. It doesn't take having to give the ultimate sacrifice to be a hero, sometimes it's the little things that make a hero.
