I really don't generally call cocky, masochistic, self-absorbed, jocks heroes because they can f'in throw a ball and run. The same types that are driven from class to class in golf carts in college, get free rides at class, and love to insert their "fame" into any open female orifice. These guys aren't heroes.

Any "hero" in sports would be someone who puts qualities and good deeds above their sports. Guys who go to college, play sports AND do engineering (or any difficult degree) or don't take the perks. Pro players who use their influence in a positive manner. Men and women athletes who use their skills positively instead of useinf the fame purely fro their own benefit.

Example:
Terrell Owens...douche
Albert Pujols...awesome player and does awesome work with Down Syndrome children

In alot of small towns across the country they are Friday Night Heroes. Just because they aren't to you doesn't mean they aren't heroes to someone else.
Thank you very much Sir. My son played football for 6 years and thru those 6 years they never lost. He has no idea what it felt like to loose a game. To me and his Mom I can assure you he is my hero and no one needs to try to say other wise.

Does anybody besides me get disgusted every time of of the people on KFOR puke a story about the Friday night hero's?

Football players are not hero's.

They are football players.

Dennis, I guess I wondering why you don't change the damn channel instead of pukeing. Seems kind of silly to me to watch something that makes you sick.

Out in the woods.
As long as we're quibbling about how other people use language, I get disgusted by people who think that apostrophes are used to make plurals.

I now return you to your regularly-scheduled grousing, already in progress.

And thank you for that enlightening and on topic comment. I'm sure everyone that is reading this thread is grateful for the English comp lesson added in such a way as to be totally useful in this topic. I'm sure no one thinks of you as an egotistical, arrogant English comp snob for you thoughtful addition to the discussion that everyone else seems to have had no problem with. But of course that would be covered under the 1st amendment under free speech as long as it is properly phrased and grammatically correct.

Althought that graphic is cool in the sense of the Rat Fink cartoon style!

My kid was my hero when he was a high school football player. Not because his team won a lot of games, and he was some big shot. They lost almost of their games. My kid kept going, and going, and kept his head up, and never quit, even when he really wanted to.

People have heroes for lots of different reasons. You don't have to throw yourself on a grenade, or save a bunch of babies just to be a hero.

There are all kinds of heroes. If you have a problem with my football kid being mine, then you are the one with the problem.

Felling like your kid is your hero is one thing. The systematic media/public "heroizing" of those involved and over emphasizing the importance of football/sports as an institution is another that can have negative results. Papa Joe was a hero to many, so was Bernie Fine.
