Had a spring break last year, I think. heard the pop, bang and clang. opened the door to the garage saw it seperated. grabbed the phone and called someone to come fix it.

Did you cautiously open the door with one hand while holding your Streamlight'ed Glock in the other hand? Or go all tactical and bust through the door with an AR or 870? :P

I replaced mine (a Craftsman) a few years ago with a Genie screwdrive from Home Depot. Only maintainance in manual was grease the screwdrive once a year. Bought another remote 1 year later for daughter at H.D. They stock differant parts and accessories as well. Just my .02.

I had just shut the door and walked in the house. About the time the garage door fully closed that spring popped. I nly opened the door to confirm my fears and get the number of Overhead door off the sticker next to my door opener.

Welp, ours crapped out a few minutes ago, I've already repaired it several times... first a new motor, then I repaired worm drive gear sheered on me, twice (it's just a nylon gear) and I replaced it both times.

So, in other words, I think it's just time to bite the bullet and get a new one.

I'd like to stay with the belt driven, so that I can hopefully get away with just replacing the unit and not having to do the whole track and everything.

So, price and value wise, what's are the better brands.

The one that is up there now is a Craftsman.

Sounds like you need the springs adjusted that's all....

when I had the nylon gear replaced, my buddy said that's why it wore out...

+1 on the screw drive.
I ended up getting the Genie Excellerator. It opens 2x as fast & closes at normal speed. I've not had any trouble with it it 5 years. Very easy to install as well.

i bought 2 chamberlin belt drive door openers and so far they work well. and they are the quietest openers ive heard. so if you have a room above your garage its something to think about. also they came with remote key pads a key fob and 2 opener remotes.

I'm very happy with my Chamberlain. I have the model with the battery backup, which was nice the day the power went out. Very quiet, and works every time.

A word of caution: be sure the optical beam sensors are aligned. I went through a couple of weeks when the door would start moving down, then stop. I couldn't figure out what was wrong until I realized the sensors were no longer aligned. Not a Chamberlain failure, more of a dummy Dave the installer failure. Don't make the same mistake.

If the sensors really bother you, they cannot be disabled. But they can be taped together, face to face, and set out of the way somewhere.

Just sayin' :D

I used to have a Craftsman that lasted for ever. A friend's Craftsman chewed up the plastic gears the first day. The secret is that you don't put a lot of tension on the chain, let it hang loose and the gears last for ever.
My motor also went bad. The bearings wore out. I went to Allied Bearings and got some impregnated bronze bearings, had a friend with a lathe turn them to match the original, drilled out the rivets, replaced the bearings and lasted for 20 years till I had the door replaced and had a new opener installed. The IR sensor (the door kept reversing) went out a couple of times, cheap and easy to replace.
There comes a time of course to let go and get a new one.
