I had a similar experience with the little guy there on the left. He had cancer. I swore it'd never have the chance to happen again. As you can see below, that didn't last.

It'll get better, but you won't forget.

Its tough to do that. Isn't it interesting how we become so attached to our pets. We talk to them as if they are human. We see them filled with emotion and the longer you live each time a buddy dies it hurts inside. I've felt your pain and I will again. This is why we taught our daughter never to name cows, chickens, rabbits or other critters we eat. Its just to hard to sit down to dinner and realize that Fred is on the menu. But we still name our animals. Peace brother!
