If I can get a FMJ to distort by firing it into a box of sand meant for such a thing, I dont see how firing a flat nosed .40 into ice wont deform.

Pure BS.

I don't know if it's legit or not. I brought it up full screen and saw that the bullet hit, bounced, then landed spinning. As far as why it was still spinning is easy. The rotational velocity was maintained on impact with the ice. At that speed, the surface of the ice will actually melt, creating a very low friction surface and not impede rotation.

Why it stands on end is fairly easy too, its the same effect that causes a top to spin and stay up, even when its center of gravity is higher than the surface.

The part I can't figure out is why the bullet doesn't deform. The only vaguely plausible idea is what I mentioned with the ice melting a micro layer of water and between that and the ice itself, lengthening the impulse of the impact enough to not deform the copper.

Ice is some weird stuff and something "bouncing" off ice doesn't strike me as impossible. The bullet bounces up from the hit, but is still spinning fast enough to land and stand up like a top.

I really hope MB tests this, because I'm anxious to see it.

I have dug plenty of FMJ bullets out of sand/mud that did not distort at all, thats not to say I have also seen plenty that got deformed a lot too. I will say it looks plausible.

Is the rotation enough to cause negative deflection? I still want to know how the angle of deflection would be negative.

As for the "Top effect", I can see this if it was a RN, but IIRC all .40s are FN and the reduction from .40 to the FN I see a fairly large axis there that would make it difficult for the axis to remain completely perpendicular to the rotation. I dont know, maybe the RPS is high enough it can maintain.

It's a full metal jacket bullet, it's not going to mushroom, or even deform. It's shot at an angle, so it's leaning towards it's base. And it's hot, so the ice is melting causing it to spin due to it's angle.

Real.
