I have a Ruger Redhawk 4" in .45 Colt that I'm pretty fond of. I see one for $750 on GB right now, so you should be able to find one somewhere near the ballpark you're looking it. Here's a decent writeup on it and its .44 Mag brother.

Note it comes with Hogue rubber grip, but replacement grips are readily available and not particularly expensive depending on what you want. I had wood on mine for a while for looks, but ended up swapping back to the rubber for comfort when shooting.

First; Stay away from any revolver that has MIM parts, and any kind of lock. If safeties were so great, Sam Colt would have put them on his first revolver. Now the question is what do you want, a Ruger, or Smith&Wesson? Sorry I didn't include Taurus, Rossi, or Colt. I don't trust the first two, and its been so long since Colt made double action revolvers its tough to find a decent Colt gunsmith.

Smith&Wesson are the (Pre-Lock, and Pre MIM) caddies of revolvers, and Rugers are the tanks of the revolver world. Now when you buy a revolver you need two possibly three, one in rimfire for lots of fun(4 or 6 inch barrels), and small critter killing. Your second should be a GP100(four inch barrel) it makes it easier to conceal, or a Redhawk in .45Colt or 44Magnum. Four or six inch barrel. Last but not least you need to look at the LCR in .38+P, or the SP101 in .357 with a two, three inch barrel. Both make for excellent CCW revolvers. I may go to hell for saying it, but Ruger revolvers have surpassed S&W revolvers for everything you'd need a revolver for!

You sir, are walking down a long and lonely path in search of a good old fashioned wheel gun.

What I mean to say is, once you step into this realm, there's no turning back. You think semi-autos are addictive? HA! I laugh at such nonsense. The world of revolvers is by far worse than any addiction you've ever had. I'm talking drinking, smoking, reruns of Gilligan's Island - you name it. The revolver addiction will bring you to your knees! Once you get one...you want another...and another...and another. :blahblah: Next thing you know, you are cursing the bottom feeders and thinking the wheel gun is the only way to go. You'll start scoffing at them young whipper-snappers and their damned ol' Dick Tracy jam-o-matics and swear and be damned that the revolver is the only weapon worth carrying. Period.

:lookaroun

Now then. Since I've given you fair warning and a small disclaimer, I'll give you my recommendation.

I literally cut my teeth on the ol' sixgun. The very first firearm I ever shot was my father's old Smith & Wesson M&P K frame Victory model. It's still my most prized possession. From there, when I became a lawman, I borrowed my uncle's model 13 with a 3 inch barrel and round butt. Pinned and recessed, of course. Then it was a Smith & Wesson model 681 that I took to CLEET. From there on, I bought and sold a thousand or so wheelies. I'm talking N frames, K frames, L frames, J frames even a Ruger or two and one lonely Colt that I still have today.

So as you can see, I've been thru almost every revolver there is. I'm afraid to go back. Like I said...it's a world like no other.

But if you are hell bent on getting a revolver, I suggest the Smith & Wesson model 66 with the 4 inch snout. P&R preferably. You can still pick up one of these for around 5 bills and it'll do everything you want it to do. Load it up with .38 Specials for practice. Load it up with hot magnums for hunting. Load it up with ratshot for the snakes and other "vermin." Just don't shoot a solid diet of magnums thru it. K frames don't like a lot of the hot stuff.

If you just gotta burn out with hot magnum loads get an L frame. Or better yet, get an N frame in .44 Magnum and really knock your socks off.

Just be aware of the world you are about to enter.

You have been warned.

Are you ready?

I am ready for it! I at least say so. Haha. Thank you so much for the advice and experience shared.

I figure I will do that exact thing, I am really liking the Ruger Alaskan as of right now.

I agree and disagree with the Sam colt safety analogy, however, the entire taurus gun lock built in idea scares the crap out of me. Just one more thing to go wrong with a gun that I may need to use to protect myself or my home. Whether carrying concealed or just fighting off snakes out in the field.

And your list of revolvers to purchase is very very similar to my list I have in my head. Simply put, my thoughts exactly.

Oooh, N-frames...:heart: I had a square-butt P&R nickel Model 29 once upon a time, and round-butt Model 25 a few years later, and a Model 27 is high on my bucket list...but then I'd have to save up for some ivory grips for it...

One Revolver I have been looking at is the .357 Ruger SP 101. Thoughts? Also, with buying, would it be a good idea to spend the extra 80 bucks or so on the Wiley Clapp Model? Also, it appears to have night sights and a different grip, both of which are features I like. For the sake of higher resale in the future (As in because it was a "special edition") if needed?
