My comment I just posted:

Well stated! As a true conservative, I'd prefer that our government focus on good governance and the principles that are codified in the Constitution. Too many people mistake America for a Democracy. We are not. We are a Constitutional Republic with limited government as elected under democratic (small "d") rules.

Societal norms are best expressed through community standards, social and religious constructs. We've allowed our representatives in government slip the leash and produce so many "mala-prohibita" laws that it's virtually impossible to avoid breaking them routinely, even for a moral and just person. This in fact undermines the foundation of the entire justice system and creates an entire class of scofflaws that harbor no ill intent towards anyone.

The most pernicious laws are those that do-gooders impose in order to "save us from ourselves". It's not their place to do any such thing.

I support the de-legalization of marriage. Marriage is an arbitrary cultural phenomenon, not something that the government should get to track and regulate. Allow courts to settle disputes of a domestic nature, but marriage contracts need not be created and filed by the state.
