See, I am thinking a 3 1/2" suspension, and maybe a 1" body lift. Trimming is not a big deal, if I don't have to, I wasn't going to though. As far as wheel rub in turning, with the bump stops removed, and adding wheel spacers, would that keep that from happening?

I looked at the RE, and really liked the Skyjacker lifts. Any experience with Skyjacker? What about Rancho? I didn't want to go to high, because then I have to start with relocating transfer case, slip yoke eliminators, gearing, etc. I do wheel this a little, but it is more of a daily driver than a wheeler.

Well you cant body lift an XJ because they are a uni-body. Depending on what the backspacing of the wheel is you probably wont have to worry about wheel rub much. What I was talking about is tire contact on the fenders. Depending on what size tire you run, when you articulate the front end is when youll make contact.

I dont have any experience with skyjacker but I have used a bunch of rancho stuff on other rigs though(not jeeps). I understand the lift hight issue since its a daily driver. Even at 4.5 of lift you can just get away with a TC drop however they rob ground clearance. The only reason youll need to change out gears is due to tire size. Honestly for best performance you need to run atleast a 4.10 gear with 33's but you can get away with stock gearing.

stock gearing on 31's on mine seems OK still... i think it would feel weak on 33's...

dont remove bumpstops... you'll need to ADD more length to them...

when you articulate (i.e. shove that tire up in the wheel well) the suspension with bigger tires, you'll end up rubbing... so you add to the bump stops to keep the wheel from shoving into the wheel well as far and keep it from rubbing. Do that front and rear.

On mine, i rub before i'm completely flexed out... i'm planning on stopping out the front and rear to keep from rubbing (31's on a 4.5" lift) and make use of all my flex. As is, i can flex about 24" before i'm rubbing so bad i'm binding the tires up. I think i can get a lot more when i add to the bump stops... Plus, i'll keep from tearing off the stock fender flares if i stop it out.

I plan on using hockey pucks up front - slip them between the springs and glue in place... start with 2, add from there. About 1" tall each.

What broke first ball joint or the ujoint. I'm putting my money on the ball joint giving way leading to the demise of the ujoint.

No Bueno either way.

Poor dana 30's are weak, I have seen alot of u-joints snap and then it spits the ball joints. If your lucky they only dislodge the ball joints partially. and also if you lucky the yolks wont get buggered up too. this guy was lucky.
