Mild or harsh winter 2012 - anyone know?

The seeds on my trees have knives in them. Which means a colder winter. If it wasn't such a huge pita to post pics I'd post some. Split them in half and you'll see it. I hope it's correct last winter was way to mild for me. They had spoons in them the last three years.

Do you split the seeds horizontally, or fillet them?
Can you tell anything from the seeds I put in my pics?

Split them into two thin halves, butterfly if you will. Should be able to see the embryo shape, spoons are mild, knives are harsh, the number of each of them is supposed to be the number of cold snaps we'll have, IIRC.
