...their music is good, its just not my kind of music.

This pretty much is on-point about most of the artists described in this thread. The title of the thread shouldn't be 'over rated' since everyone has their own rating system in their head. It should be 'who don't you like?'

I know NFF is a musician - and a good one. He knows what it's like to try and write a song that someone will like - much less, the world. I've tried to write songs. I know mine will never see the airwaves.

Most of the artists listed here have proven to be successful enough to be known by us - even when we don't buy their music. That is a verifiable, black and white, dollars and cents measuring stick.

If you don't like a certain kind of music...that's cool. No one's gonna like everything. But to say a band like the Beatles (that has sold more albums in the US than any other band) is overrated is like saying Coca-Cola is overrated. Sure, you might think it sucks, but an overwhelming segment of the population disagrees. Like Dustin, I'm not a fan of DMB. But I gotta have some respect for him being successful doing something artistic.

There are lots of bands that I won't listen to, much less buy their records. But I can't knock a band for recording their music any more than I'd tell an artist his paintings shouldn't be painted.

Not really. If you don't like someone that is not wildly popular or critically acclaimed, they are not overrated. You just don't like them.

A mediocre band selling millions of records is an overrated band. The Beatles are a prime example, it seems most everybody thinks they invented music and can do no wrong. They get credit for things they did not do, from critics and fans. Overrated. They got to a point after a couple albums where they could have made a 50 minute album of Ringo snoring and people would have bought it and called it brilliant. They could do no wrong.

The dollars and cents measuring stick doesn't mean anything. Is Hannah Ray Cyrus a brilliant musician? She makes money.

If I made an album of me singing in the car with the windows down while driving down the highway, and it sold 30 million copies and got good reviews....I would be overrated. Actuaclly if I made an album of anything and it sold one copy, I would be overrated.

Trust me, I won't be coming to her defense as a musician, but the point is that the rating scale is not exclusive to just you or me. Everyone's rating scale is different.

Look at The Hurt Locker. Good movie. Picture of the year? Not on my rating scale, but it was on somebody's.

Nickleback, trapt, Nirvana, kiss, ac/dc, slipknot, Marilyn Manson, insane clown posse, Puddle of mudd, my thoughts are, if it's on the radio, (excluding classic rock, 80s, etc stations) it sucks. Not to say there is no crap on those stations, it's just that everything new usually sucks and sounds exactly like the last song that played.

Agree on the Beatles. Never liked them.

FIL and wife used to argue between the Beatles and KISS as their favorite bands b/c they sold a lot of songs. Both are overrated IMHO.

Alabama, is it Country?

Country music hasn't been good since Merle sobered up.

I'll piss somebody off. :flamed:

Shakira: Hot body and azz. Sings like a goat.
Janet Jackson: Vocally weak.
Bruce Springsteen: Terrible singer, some good songs.
Bob Dylan: Knockin' on Heavens Door is about the only song I can stomach him singing.
Stevie Nicks: Goat, eye candy back in the day.
Gwen Stefani: Should have stuck with No Doubt

.....Nirvana.....

Agreed, the worst "Seattle grunge scene" band in my book, but the most popular.

The rest you listed are not overrated. They suck, but LOTS of people hate them. An overrated band must be a crappy band that is put on a pedestal by the majority. Nirvana counts, because they get Beatle-like worship.
