Sounds like he's trying to get kids to think critically rather than just saying "this is true, so don't argue". Isn't school supposed to make people think, not just spew out what they are told?

At one point in our history the greatest scientific minds thought that Christopher Columbus would sail off the end of the world, and this was regarded as fact.

Perspective.

Yup, they also thought that what the church said about the sun revolving around the earth was fact, as well. Turns out, the church was wrong.

Theory, i do not think that word means what you think it means.
Exactly. Theory is a much stronger word in science than it is in ordinary usage. We found out in the twentieth century that Isaac Newton's THEORY of gravity isn't the last word in physics. You don't have to believe in the THEORY of gravity, but its a good idea to act as if it were true.

Evolution is a theory, that's it, a "theory", never proven, but it's been taught as fact for many years. If evolution can't be proven, then what's the alternative?

I would have to disagree, I've always seen it taught as the "Theory of Evolution," never the law or fact of evolution. I can't say the same for creationisim.
As I see it, the THEORIES of creationism or intelligent design fall under religion and shouldn't be anywhere near a government funded institution.
