i just got a new garmin off craigslist.... you cant beat em

Was it the one that was stolen from me a couple of weeks ago? If they had not erased all of the locations it would show home as being on Morgan Rd in Mustang. I would love to catch the jerk that took it from my car in the afternoon.

What's the general opinion?

The general opinion is that handheld GPS units are a complete and utter waste of money when for around the same price, you can get an android phone or iphone which has multiple free apps that do the same thing and more, AND are ALSO, ya know, an android or iphone, too! :)

Boat & car-mounted units are another story....

I have two GPS apps on my Omnia II. neither was working last week in Duncan. Besides I prefer to keep the battery up on my cellphone for emergencies. I'll run the batteries down on a hand held gps(if I ever buy one) first.

My opinion on GPS units. For vehicles they are a great asset or major safety factor. The GPS does not replace common area knowledge or research with looking at maps before leaving town. I use mine daily. Its a great heads up display for speedometer and general info. Such as upcomming streets. street layout. Knowing that curve is up ahead is always nice.

I really like using it when I want to find my way out of a crazy neighborhood. windy streets very few ways out. Or when you have road closures that leave you with no clear detour.

Money well spent. But it is like hanging a couple hundred bucks from your windshield or dash. easy theft item.

You were using apps which require the 3G cell phone connection to work - but there are many other apps which do NOT need to the 3G to work, some of which are also free (at least on iphones) - they work, in essence, no differently than any handheld GPS. They download the maps when you DO have a signal and/or wifi, then work fine without coverage. The GPS receiver works everywhere, signal or not, and once the maps are downloaded, you're in bidness in the boonies, with one of these types of apps.

On battery life, I guess I could see that in some situations. But me personally, I'm back at the pickup at the end of every hunting day (whether primitive camping or otherwise), and my pickup has a cell phone charger in it - and my battery will last at least 2 days, so I can't see any battery life concern.

Only concern for me would be dropping the cell phone in the pond or creek, and killing it, then getting lost and dying in the woods. But the only way a handheld GPS unit would be better if it's the waterproof kind, which are even more outrageously-priced, relative to an iphone or android phone, than the non-waterproof ones. I just keep my cell phone in a ziploc freezer bag if I'm crossing a creek or in a boat. I also keep at least 2 ordinary compasses in addition to the 'GPS unit' (i.e. the iphone) on me when hunting way back yonder off the road, in case it does crap out.

I know little about car GPS units, but grew tired of staring at my iphone for directions while driving, so I bought a refurb TomTom 355XL from Walmart online for $88. Big screen, auto darkening, comes with windshield mount and works fine.

I'm sure there are better, but I like to just type in the destination and go. The data is accurate and easy to view. I'm buying another for the wife's car.

Well I have to say that I had a new smartphone and shot it three times in the back yard. Went back to my Triton(LG). I like things that work when I need them to. As for GPS on a cell? It's crap! Without 3G you had better be traveling 3 MPH or you missed what you needed.

Thank you all for your input. I will go tomorrow and get a Garmin Nuvi 1300. Seems like the middle of the road GPS and dedicated to that. The phone BS is exactly that. I need directions when I can't call for them, otherwise I would have found it myself.

I do really appreciate the input from all! I know you guys love your smart phones, but from what I saw the only smart ones are selling you apps for something already paid for.

I may have been able to sell mine, but 3 rounds of gold dot .45 was worth WAY more.
