I have a Garmin nuvi 550 it is the coolest GPS I have ever owned.... it works off road terrain hiking topo maps... and it also works on lakes and rivers....

we use it a lot I use it in the truck to go to the lake and then snap it in the boat to go on the water... use with the lake maps.... it also has the get back feature so you can go to any new lake and fish then just hit go home and it takes you back to the marina either back tracking or just straight back.... you can mark way points for good fishing spots... and it also has the topo maps for the lakes showing you the underwater structure, channels, etc...... when hunting you carry it... it is the exact same as on water topo maps off of the road and it is waterproof so no worry about rain or snow or spray from boat

best money we have ever spent....

I own a Garmin and have used a couple in rentals also been around a Tom Tom extensively. I definitely choose the Garmin, though as others have said, I use my smartphone almost always now.

The general opinion is that handheld GPS units are a complete and utter waste of money when for around the same price, you can get an android phone or iphone which has multiple free apps that do the same thing and more, AND are ALSO, ya know, an android or iphone, too! :)

Boat & car-mounted units are another story....

That might work in ideal conditions. However, I've never had a cell phone robust enough to hold up in the field. I accidentally left my Garmin GPSMap 60 mounted on my ATV all night in the rain. The next morning, I wiped the ice off screen, set my waypoint and carried on to my hunting spot.

I highly reccommend Garmin units. I have mutliple handheld and vehicle units. I have no complaints with any of them. I've had great customer service from Garmin. Plus, they are a U.S. company.

I leave mine in the boat on the dash when we camp.... it is waterproof and never given me any trouble.....

besides I agree they are a US company.....
