Since you mention the spread of the Shotty, here is a target from ~10yards with defensive 3" load (I even shot this one handed to see what it felt like...felt like a .500 Smith long barrel revolver)

Surprisingly, with 2 hands and 2 3/4" Buckshot it isn't unmanageable...everyone that has shot it says it's easier to handle than expected...

That's at 10yds? That is insanely spread out for 00 Buck at 10yds. What is the length of that barrel and what ammo are you using? I've patterned 18" shotguns with several rounds of ammo and never come close to that. Those NFA SMS/AOW shorties just earned a lot more respect in my book.

I thought the same thing...I chose 10yards (maybe close to 11) since I figured that is a good distance to pattern a Shorty although I know I have 70 foot distances in the house.

I honestly don't remember what ammo it was...I had random 2 3/4" OO Buck and shot once at a clean target to know what spread I could expect. All of the ammo performed the same, this one just shows a one shot spread for ~10yds.

Also, it's a good reminder for everyone to go pattern their HD shotgun...

So here's my question:

If a would be intruder is not actually in your home, and you go outside to seek him/her/it out, gun in hand, are you not brandishing at the very least? This is just a legal question.

Starting Nov. 1st, any home owner can be anywhere on their property with a pistol, rifle or shotgun without a permit. So brandishing or checking out a strange noise while armed will not be a problem.

I use to be of the inclination to stay inside and just call the police if I had a prowler. But these days, it could take a long time for the police to arrive and a bad guy could steal a lot of expensive tools from the workshop in that time. Being on a fixed income, I'm no longer inclined for my home or workshop to become a 'supermarket' for the local druggies and thieves to come along looking for something to pawn for quick cash. So I and 3 of my neighbors look out for each other. We see a strange vehicle or person [day or night], in the alley or parked in front of the house.. the police get called & we arm ourselves.

As for the weapon I'll grab. I've got a Glock 23 w/ laser in a matress buddy mounted holster.. but for checking around the house at night, I've about decided on my S&W M&P 15-22. It has a holographic red dot & flashlight. And I can pop-off 25 rounds of CCI .22LR Stingers extremely fast.. just as fast as I can squeeze the trigger. 1640 FPS. Not much different from having 25 pellets of OO buck shot... but quieter.
